Roger Federer ‘hopes’ Novak Djokovic breaks his Wimbledon record

Roger Federer has revealed his ‘hope’ for Novak Djokovic to ‘add to tennis history’, as the Serb eyes a record-equalling Wimbledon title this year.

Federer is an eight-time Wimbledon champion, with his last title coming in 2017 when he beat Marin Cilic in the final.

However, his current standalone record may be equalled this year by his great rival Novak Djokovic, which the Swiss seems to welcome.

“Nowadays it’s very media-driven.. I was driven by breaking records but as you sit back, you have a new perspective.. you’re just proud of your achievements,” said Federer. “I hope he does it. Anything more he does adds to tennis history.”

Djokovic has made a strong start to his 18th Wimbledon campaign, with the 23-time Grand Slam champion winning his opening two matches in straight sets.

The defending champion will also be looking to equal another record of Federer’s, as he is also gunning for a fifth consecutive title at SW19, which Federer achieved between 2003 and 2007.

Djokovic now awaits the winner of Stan Wawrinka and Tomas Martin Etcheverry, as he looks to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon for a sixth consecutive Championships.
