Alexander Zverev to miss crucial Davis Cup tie as injury battle continues

Alexander Zverev and his struggles with injury continue as he was left out of Germany’s Davis Cup team to face Canada.

Zverev, the world number six, has been out of action since June after injuring his ankle during his semi final match against Rafael Nadal at the French Open.

He had hoped to have made a return to action in September by competing for his country in the quarter finals of the competition. However, he pulled out due to a bone edema on his foot. This is a separate issue from the ankle ligament damaged suffered at the French Open.

Zverev’s season seems to be over as the injury will also rule him out of the Paris Masters in November and the finale of the Davis Cup in Malaga, if Germany qualify.

”At the moment it doesn’t look like Alexander Zverev will be ready for action again until the Davis Cup”, read a statement from the German Tennis Federation.

The former US Open finalist had a chance at the number one ranking before his injury in June. However, he has since slipped to world number six and will almost certainly move further down the rankings. He was defending over 1,200 points from winning the ATP finals last year and over 350 points from reaching the semis in Paris.

Germany’s Davis Cup team progressed in September without Zverev and will have to do so once more. The likes of Oscar Otte and Jan-Lennard Struff will compete in the singles against a tough opponent in Canada. They boast top 20 singles players in Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov.
