‘I’m a pretty good player…’ – Serena Williams keeps her career alive at US Open

Serena Williams, and her career, is still alive at the US Open after she took out the number two seed Anett Kontaveit.

The 23-time major winner will retire from tennis after the US Open, meaning any match could be her last.

Understandably, Kontaveit gave her a stern test, but Serena had enough to come through to match with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 win.

“You know there’s no rush here, Serena Williams said on court after the match, “I’m loving this crowd – it’s really fantastic. There’s still a little left in me. We’ll see.”

“Well, I’m a pretty good player. This is what I do best. I love a challenge and I love rising to the challenge. I have been practicing really well and I was thinking ‘it just isn’t me’ [after recent losses]”

“I’m just Serena. After I lost the second set I thought I have to give my best effort because this could be it. I just did my best.”

Williams will play Ajla Tomljanović in the third round after the Australian beat Evgeniya Rodina 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
