US Open Second Service: Nick Kyrgios issued hefty fine and Coco Gauff clashes with umpire “You’re stealing points”
Looking back on the big news in our exclusive ‘US Open Second Service’… Nick Kyrgios got issued a hefty fine for spitting as Coco Gauff clashed with umpire Rask “You’re stealing points” plus more…
To start, Nick Kyrgios has been fined US$7,500, the biggest penalty of the US Open so far, for spitting in his second-round victory over Benjamin Bonzi.
The Australian talent had to fight hard to put the Frenchman away, describing himself as ‘hanging by a thread’ immediately after the four-set victory.
And that stress came to a fore in the third set, when after a missed volley Kyrgios spat in the direction of his box before going on a tirade of obscenity towards them, shouting: “Go home if you’re not going to f***ing support me bro!”
In other news, Barbara Schett says it is âhard to believe the Serena Williams era is overâ after the American bowed out at the US Open.
Williams stated before the tournament that the US Open would be her last, and so her 5-7, 6-7, 1-6 defeat to Ajla Tomljanovic has almost certainly brought an end to her wonderful career.
âItâs hard to believe the Serena Williams era is finished, probably the Venus Williams era is finished as well,â Schett told Eurosport.

Furthermore, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will feel hard done by after some unfortunate timing late in their US Open doubles first-round match.
With Fernandez and Saville serving up a mini-break at 7-5, Gauff had a volley and then a put-away smash on top of the net, appearing to regain the mini-break to make it 7-6.
But Saville had stopped playing mid-point as a napkin was blown across the court behind Pegula at the baseline, and under the letter of the law the umpire called a let and a replay of the point.
âWhat! She canât call that!â Pegula shouted towards the umpire. âShe (Gauff) had a sitter on top of the net!â
âYouâre stealing points from us!â Gauff interjected.

And lastly, Iga Swiatek is not being talked about as much as one might expect of a world number one at the US Open, as a certain Serena Williams determines the ebb and flow of attention in New York this year.
âA little bit, yeah, for sure,â she admitted. âYou can see the difference to Roland Garros and Wimbledon when I came back after winning Roland Garros.
âBut I would say it doesnât really matter for me. If Iâm going to play well and if Iâm going to do my work on court, I know I will be fine in terms of everything thatâs going around, you know.
