Venus Williams reveals return that shows Wimbledon intention

Venus Williams has been announced to be playing at the Libema Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, with the seven-time major winner showing her intention to return to the Wimbledon singles draw.

Williams has not played many tournaments in recent years, competing at only four events in 2022, which is reflected by her singles ranking of No.701.

The 42-year-old had intended to play the Australian Open this year, and despite picking up her first singles win since 2021 in Auckland was forced to return her wildcard after picking up a hamstring injury.

“That’s the point when I withdrew from the Australian Open,” said Williams back in February. “I had a wildcard and it was so awesome, but it wasn’t for me and I wanted someone else to have that opportunity because I knew I wouldn’t have a chance to play. I knew that it was going to be a bad injury.”

However, after four months away from the WTA tour, Williams has been announced to make her debut appearance at the grass court event in the Netherlands that takes place from the 12th June.

The tournament announced the news on social media, “A legend arrives… We proudly present Venus Williams as a participant in our WTA tournament! The American receives a wildcard and will debut on the ‘s-Hertogenbosch grass courts.”

Wimbledon is Williams’ most successful Grand Slam tournament, with five singles titles and six doubles crowns alongside her sister, Serena, to her name.
