Serena Williams ‘not very happy’ with US Open farewell
Serena Williams has reflected on her final match at the US Open, saying she ‘can’t believe’ she did not come away from Arthur Ashe Stadium with a win.
The tennis legend made her farewell in New York suggesting she would be ‘evolving’ away from the sport, after losing in the third round match to Ajla Tomljanovic, 7-5 6(4)-7 6-1.
However, in a recent interview Williams declared that she was not best pleased with how her 17-year professional career ended, “I was actually not very happy at all.”
She continued, “Just because of the result. I was there to keep going and to keep winning. Yeah, it was more or less like, āI canāt believe I let that match goā more than anything, you know.”
The 23-time Grand Slam champion confessed that she did enjoy the occasion, but the result left a dampener, āObviously, it was a great moment and a great memory and Iāve never felt ā I donāt feel like Iāve left anything, but I just felt like, āWhat could I have done better that day?ā”
Williams is now focussing on her off-court exploits, including her investment business ‘Serena Ventures’,Ā āIāve literally given my whole life to tennis and itās time for me to give my life to something else,” she said.
āIāve literally given my whole life to tennis and itās time for me to give my life to something elseā: @serenawilliams is moving away from the tennis court ā for now, at least.

The 41-year-old also invests in the UFC and has minor shares in an NFL team, the Miami Dolphins, with her sister Venus, “Winning to me is just to pick out the best deals to invest in, you know. We need people like me. We need women writing the cheques, because I really am a big believer in like attracts like.”
While Serena has walked away from the sport, Venus is still on the tour at the age of 42. Despite missing the Australian Open, due to an injury picked up in Auckland, Venus has already won a match in 2023 against Katie Volynets.
The older of the Williams sisters has won a match on the WTA tour every year since the age of 14, besides 2022.
