The lightest model in the ASICS tennis shoe range, the Solution Speed FF3, has received a full revamp including new technologies that have ‘blown away’ world No.17 Belinda Bencic.

Japanese footwear and apparel brand ASICS are continuing their impressive record of regular technological enhancements for their premium tennis shoe range by announcing the launch of the 3rd iteration of the Solution Speed, the FF3 model.

Designed to favour attacking all-court players, the Solution Speed is considerably lighter than the other two models in the ASICS tennis shoe range, the Gel Resolution and the Court FF. This lightness combined with the shoe’s updated SPEEDTRUSS™ technology gives the flexibility needed to move freely.

ASICS SOLUTION SPEED FF3

“With each new product we launch, we start from the core pillars of the ASICS design philosophy. ASICS uses athlete wear testing, biomechanical science, recycled materials and decades of continuous innovation to create products that feel best for both body and mind,” said Tatsuya Ishikawa, Global Product Manager, Tennis Footwear. “Solution Speed FF3 is a great testament to this process, and we are confident it will be a game-changer for the speedy all-court player.”

Launching on January 15th, 2024, the shoe features ‘Precision-Sole’ technology “derived from the fact that it is the precise amount of material needed to have the optimal grip, without adding unnecessary weight,” say ASICS.

ASICS invested heavily in the design process over the past two years and in fact Tennishead CLUB members were involved in prototype testing and feeding back for this model. ASICS were able to to reduce the amount of rubber, one of the heaviest parts of a shoe, without losing grip on the court, then they applied a unique pattern, which is a combination of advanced technology and Japanese craftsmanship.

For the first time in a tennis shoe, the upper features a “newly developed engineered woven mesh, designed for more breathability and comfort than previous models, but still durable using a thick woven material.”

World No.12 Alex de Minaur was integral in the design process for the new Solution Speed FF3. “It was a great process, to be able to give my feedback on how to improve a very good shoe already. They delivered what I needed, more flexibility and a lighter feel, but also some serious evolution with the PRECISON-SOLE outsole. It just shows the attention to detail ASICS always have when creating new tennis shoes, and that is why they are the best for me.”

The ASICS Solution Speed FF3 will be available to new Tennishead CLUB members from January 2024 as the key benefit in our unique virtual tennis club. Find out more.

ASICS Tennis Academy team

The much trodden path for aspiring tennis players is well documented. Head to a sun soaked tennis factory, play tennis under the watchful eye of a famous coach for 6 hours a day and hey presto! But for coaches themselves there was never the support program in place to help them learn their trade and achieve their career goals. That was until the ASICS Tennis Academy came along.

Launched in 2020, the ASICS Tennis Academy (ATA) aims to ’empower tennis coaches of all levels’. Existing virtually with regular online meet-ups and live events, the academy currently supports coaches from 6 European tennis playing nations with more being added. Coaches can apply to join or ASICS will use their team in each country to identify and invite prospective members.

Tennis coaching can be lonely with a lot of those working as coaches being self employed and having to stand on their own feet as they learn their trade and grow their businesses. Other tennis brands will offer coaches deals to help provide kit but no brand has ever put in place a support network that is focussed on helping coaches grow their knowledge and experience in this way.

We spoke to ASICS Tennis Academy manager Louis Rouach and also to ATA member Harrison Lombe about the history of the academy and their experience.

Why did you launch the ASICS Tennis Academy (ATA)?

Thomas Johansson is a member of the ATA

Louis Roach (LR): “The plan behind the ATA was to support tennis coaches both on and off court.

“Firstly, we researched tennis coaches from around Europe about their specific needs and to understand the support they received from other brands in terms of equipment, but also off court support. From the research we realised that existing coach-brand relationships are very contractual and based just around equipment.

“The ATA has done well in creating a European community of tennis coaches that is connected and shares knowledge. Tennis is very individualistic but we want to create links between coaches from many different countries and levels of coaching. The ATA is not just about elite coaching as we want to help coaches who teach from beginner right up to the likes of Thomas Johannson, Danilo Pizzorno, Ruben Hidalgo, Jordi Vilaro and Richard Ruckelhausen (formerly coach of Gael Monfils).

“We believe that if we can support the ‘everyday’ club tennis coach then we can help to grow the game and help coaches and players to improve.”

What are the benefits of being a coach with the ATA?

LR: “ATA is about being part of an international community with access to other tennis coaches who you can talk with a share thoughts, ideas but also players. We have coaches that we have helped to exchange players.

“We also have Facebook and WhatsApp groups within each country for the coaches to share knowledge and we’ve arranged events for the same reason, such as webinars. These training sessions involve sharing programs, tips and expertise on all areas of tennis coaching from mental, to physical, to social media and online understanding that can help the coach improve not only their on court work but also their off court lives and business.

“It’s a unique program that we haven’t seen anywhere else or even in other sports.”

What’s been the most interesting learnings since starting the ATA?

LR: “We’ve found it fascinating to see coaches within the ATA exchanging players. We know that and individual sport like tennis will always create rivalries but by having the ATA as an international group then you lose the concern over sharing secrets with your competitor coach or player.”

How have you recruited the ATA coaches?

LR: “We started small through our existing ASICS community managers in each country who had existing relationship with coaches. We needed coaches who were willing to give their time and expertise rather than just wanting to receive equipment from ASICS.

“The ATA has now grown and this increased visibility has meant coaches knocking on our door wanting to join our program. Now from January-March each year we are open to applications from any coach from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium or The Netherlands then we’ll launch in the UK in early 2024.”

What’s the profile of an ATA coach?

LR: “We have a diverse profile of coaches in our academy. A lot of coaches are from clubs who want to improve themselves so that they can be more effective in coaching club players. We are also trying to promote the interests of female tennis coaches around Europe as we see that as something which isn’t catered for particularly well at the moment.

“We also look to recruit coaches who are strong influencers on social media as this helps to get the message out about ATA to a wider cohort.

“We have high visibility coaches who are working with tour level players on the ATP and WTA Tours such as Thomas Johansson. We really like when we see these tour level coaches on the ATA chatting with club coaches about their work because it creates an unexpected level of community sharing.”

Have ASICS been using the ATA to learn about tennis shoes and other products which can help your main business requirements?

LR: “100% we have. ATA coaches are asked to help with feedback on our products by testing our new shoes and apparel. We need feedback not only from top level players but also from everyday club players as they are the ones that will be wearing our products, and the ATA coaches have been really helpful with this.

“We have a clearly defined feedback loop where the ATA coaches can talk to the community manager in their country who can then direct that feedback to ASICS own product development team. This might be for a one-off product issue or we might have a recurring occurrence that needs to be fixed by our designers in Japan, which all helps to give us an edge over our competition.”

Why are you now looking to launch the ATA in the UK and what about the USA?

LR: “We’ve been looking at the UK for quite a while. We now have the resources in the UK which means we are set up with the necessary manpower to get the ATA UK live in 2024.

“ATA has been launched as a European initiative but we are having discussions with all other regions such as Japan and the USA but we have to learn the best ways of working in those countries before we can extend the ATA outside of Europe.”

Harrison Lombe is an ATA coach member. He was a professional player himself then turned to coaching and is based at the Barcelona Total Tennis academy. He started by coaching the juniors at the club and then worked his way up to become a travelling coach working with the professional players linked to his Barcelona academy. He is now working exclusively as the coach for Rebeka Masarova who is currently ranked No.64 in the World.

Harrison Lombe ASICS Tennis AcademyWhat’s the main differences between coaching a top professional like Rebeka Masarova versus coaching at a tennis club with amateurs?

Harrison Lombe (HL): “With a top player it’s very different. They already know what they need to do and so there is much less screaming at them to motivate them, like I have to with the juniors I’ve worked with in the past!

“Pros have a lot of input in their own training so we can have a conversation about what they need to practise and learn. The relationship you have with a player is also a big part of the coaching so you can help them to be in the best mindset when they are competing. The mental side of the game at the top levels of tennis is so huge so as a coach it’s important that you give them the belief that they can win. A quote I love is that it’s ‘the one who believes more is the one who’s going to win’, so if your player has the right plan then they can come out the other side with a win whereas at the junior level of coaching it’s quite different.”

What’s the difference in your coaching style between being at a tournament with your player and being on the practise court

HL: “I like to take what I’ve learned from watching them play their tournament matches and apply that to the practise court. A pro player like Rebeka knows how to hit the ball. She’s No.64 in the world! So we work on finding her best mental space and working on the best tactics to push for that 1% improvement which, at her level, makes the difference between winning and losing.”

Why did you want to get involved with the ASICS Tennis Academy?

HL: “When we were approached by ASICS I was excited because I always wore ASICS shoes when I was a player. Now with the program that the ATA provides I’ve been able to get to know other coaches from around the World and I still talk to them and have made friends with them. I can use their insights to help my own work and push myself forward. And the ASICS brand mantra of ‘Sound Mind, Sound Body’ really resonates in my tennis work and also in my life, so it’s a perfect brand to represent.”

What does it involve when you engage with other ATA coaches?

HL: “I’ve attended a live event for the ATA in Paris which was interesting as I met coaches from different backgrounds. From the sessions we attended I noticed coaches using different techniques and in tennis you can always be learning. I’ve then connected on social media with the other coaches from the ATA.”

Coaching can be lonely so does the ATA help you feel part of a community?

HL: “The way ASICS has helped form this group of coaches means I have colleagues now that I can talk to about anything, right away. I like to learn something new so having other coaches that I can talk to online or at events is great.”

ASICS Gel-Resolution 9 women's Tennishead CLUB

How much impact do you believe equipment has on a tennis player’s game?

HL: “As a coach you definitely get involved in the equipment that your player uses. Players want everything to be perfect and with ASICS we’re lucky that they produce three different models of shoe to suit different playing styles. I think choosing the right equipment is hugely important and it definitely effects performance. You see many pro players are wearing ASICS shoes even if they aren’t sponsored to wear them because they feel they are the best tennis shoe available.”

What would you say are the benefits to club coaches of being part of the ASICS Tennis Academy?

HL: “Joining a community that you can call upon to help you become a better coach. I’m one a few coaches in the ATA that are coaching high level players, so for the other coaches to be able to draw upon our knowledge is a huge benefit. As a tennis coach you have to take any help you can to improve your own work. I love stealing ideas from other coaches so having the ATA really helps in providing ideas and tips and advice from all levels of coach.

“Making connections around the world is also great. If you ever need something as a coach in another country then you can find a coach through the ATA in that country who you can ask for help.”

If you are a coach or club that wants to get involved with the ASICS Tennis Academy then applications are open from January to March each year and you can be kept up to date by following @ASICStennis or by emailing Louis.

Novak Djokovic US Open 2023 ASICS

Tennis shoes come in all shapes and sizes but only one brand, ASICS, create trainers that are specifically designed for different styles of player. We spoke to an expert to find out what makes each ASICS model different and why.

Calum works for ASICS and is a font of knowledge on each model of tennis shoe in their premium range and understands how each shoe is created to support different styles of tennis player. The current ASICS tennis shoe range is made up of the Gel-Resolution, the Solution Speed and the Court FF. ASICS do have other tennis shoes but these three are the premium range and are the models specifically designed to suit different styles of player.

The 3 models weren’t all launched at the same time with the Gel-Resolution coming first and is now on it’s 9th iteration. Then the Solution Speed and Court FF were both launched around the same time with the Court FF on it’s 3rd model and the Solution Speed on it’s 2nd with a 3rd due to be launched very soon.

The general rule of thumb for the three different styles is that the Gel-Resolution is the most sturdy and durable which makes it ideal for a baseline grinder or someone who needs plenty of support when they move around the court. The Solution Speed is the lightest of the three ASICS tennis shoes and is designed to support players that want to move around all areas the court especially when attacking the net. The Court FF was actually designed in close collaboration with none other than Novak Djokovic and therefore is designed to suit someone who wants the ‘best of both’ in terms of the support required to play long rallies from the baseline but then also quickly shift into the dynamic movements of an attacking player.

In terms of weight, the Gel Resolution comes in as the heaviest followed by the Court FF and then the Solution Speed which is around 50g lighter than the other two.

Tennishead has reviewed each shoe independently using our expert tennis play testers and you can check out those review here:

Court FF3 review

When we spoke with Calum we wanted to delve much deeper into how ASICS have created such a popular and unique range of tennis shoes which are favoured by many of the top professionals both on the ATP and the WTA tours.

Tennishead: “How has the Gel Resolution developed over the years?”

Calum from ASICS: “Nine shoes in about nine years, so a lot can change in that time. As a brand we are constantly innovating, pushing the boundaries on technology, so a lot can change in nine years. So, for us as such a traditional brand, but also an innovative brand it’s very important for us to look at what’s new, and what’s coming in.

“So, we can see the changes of midsole materials to lighter weight foams, we can see uppers changing to more sustainable fabric, but also durable, and then we also see the things like additions to support as well, so we see the introductions of the DYNAWALL, circa a year ago. So, we see a lot of change and a lot of dynamism within the shoe and ultimately that’s where we get to with the Gel Resolution 9, a really nice supportive shoe that’s designed for that baseline player.

Tennishead: “What makes the Gel Resolution 9 so suited to a baseline player?”

Calum from ASICS: “It’s all about support and stability, so if we take a look at the outsole of the shoe we can see it’s got a full ground contact (felt?), so that gives great traction underfoot, it gives you great stability and a nice steady platform. As we come up, we’ve got the DYNAWALL in the midsole, which is designed to handle those lateral movements and take the pressure off the foot, and just keep you nice and secure on that platform.

“That works really nicely with the DYNAWRAP, which is within the lacing system. So, as you pull the laces in nice and tight, it creates a great wrap around the foot, again giving you that support, giving you that stability that you know and want for that baseline player. Then you’ve got the nice Flexion fit upper, which just gives that little bit of flexibility, but still keeping your foot nice and secure overall.”

Tennishead: “How can the Solution Speed be light and flexible without compromising stability?”

Calum from ASICS: “Some people have in mind that if you get a lighter weight shoe it’s going to be less stable, but we can put some really innovative technologies in there to help with that. If we start with the outwards sole, it’s got a two-piece which creates great flexibility from the outset, but what we also have is our special Twistruss, which gives great torsional stability within the shoe, but also maximises flexibility from the way it’s strategically placed within the shoe and also the ergonomics of it.

“As we come into the midsole, we’ve got a really nice piece of Flytefoam, which gives really nice softness underfoot, but is also really nice and lightweight. So, it’s 50% lighter than industry standard DVA. What we do have is a nice addition on the forefoot as well of Flytefoam propel, so it just gives that little bit more of an energetic pop as you want to get to the front of the court for that all-court playing style. And then as we come up into the upper, we’ve got Flexion fit, which again nice and flexible to make sure that your foot is supported well, but in those quicker movements.”

Tennishead: “Can a tennis player really notice the weight difference between the shoes?”

Calum from ASICS: “For us, I think that it depends on the playing style, so these are designed for two different playing styles. One is designed for the baseline, which is the Resolution, and then you have the Solution Speed, which is designed for an all-court playing style. So, ultimately if you were to wear the Resolution to play all-court, you would notice it, it would feel a little bit bulkier and a little bit heavier. We are talking around 50 grams difference, now if we talked five, 10 grams, ultimately you probably wouldn’t be able to notice that, but 50 grams is quite substantial if you’re trying to sprint from the back of the court to the front of the court, to the net. Underfoot you are really going to notice that over a long period of time and you will start to fatigue a bit quicker as well.

“It’s all about being able to provide that stability still for those quicker sharper movements, but having it in that lighter package, and we have really been able to do that with the Solution Speed.”

Tennishead: “How much involvement does Novak Djokovic actually have in the design of the Court FF shoe?”

Calum from ASICS: “We actually create around eight or nine different rounds of shoes which have subtle changes to them. And he works quite closely with our Core Performance Sports Directors over in our Amsterdam office. He has a big involvement within the decision-making around athlete testing and he helps us to shape and mould the product that it is today, for that best of both player.

“The good thing is, he doesn’t actually have a different shoe to what a consumer would wear, so the shoe that you buy on the shelf as an end consumer is exactly the same shoe that he would wear on the court and he doesn’t make any changes to it. So, that is really testament to the work that we do with him.”

ASICS Gel-Resolution 9 tennis shoe review

The 9th version of the Gel-Resolution, ASICS’ original dedicated tennis shoe, has hit the courts. Now worn by Matteo Berrettini, we were intrigued to find out how the shoe has changed especially considering the huge popularity of the previous version.

Baseline grinding has actually been around since hard court tennis first became popular, just ask Bjorn Borg. Making yourself hard to beat by never missing a groundstroke is an incredibly effective way of winning tennis points. So to have a company as advanced as ASICS designing 9 versions of a shoe that is specifically focussed on supporting that style of play, is a real bonus.

What’s new in the Gel-Resolution 9?

We spoke at length to Rene Zandbergen who is the designer behind all of ASICS’ tennis shoes. He told us that the key differences between the Gel-Resolution 8 and this 9th version are…

A new ‘Dynawrap’ which supports the top and front of the foot and helps keep the foot in place when performing the most dynamic movements on court.

The increased length of the outsole which helps improve the player’s connection with the court especailly during side to side movements.

An updated ‘Dynawall’ which is the technology that sits on the side of the shoe near the arch. This should now enable a ‘smoother return’ when getting back to middle after hitting a wide shot.

Watch as our experts try out the ASICS Gel-Resolution 9 tennis shoes

The Gel-Resolution 9 review

It’s crucial for our credibility and the integrity of our reviews that when we take a new shoe onto the tennis court we simply let the players try it out and we publish exactly what they report. It’s the only truly unbiased method of reviewing a product. This time we were joined by Michelle and Cheerag who are both professional tennis players plying their trade on the ITF circuits.

Michelle, who has played tennis since she was four years old in the Netherlands then moved to England and competed nationally before turning pro at 18, had never worn ASICS shoes before. Her usual shoe is the Nike Vapor

Cheerag, who was playing ATP Futures until last year when he had a few injuries so took six months off before starting to play again professional from the beginning of  of 2023, had recently moved to the ASICS Solution Speed model after years of wearing Nike Vapors, mainly because he had suffered recently with shin splints.

ASICS Gel-Resolution 9 technologyWhat’s your thoughts on the design and colour scheme of these new ASICS Gel-Resolution 9 tennis shoes?

Michelle: “I think they’re very pretty. I like to play with white shoes and I like that it has a little bit of pop with the purple, so I thought they were really pretty.”

Cheraag: “I like the design quite a lot, specifically this kind of new bit on the side that they’ve added it’s actually quite cool. It’s a cool looking shoe.”

When you first tried on the shoe, how comfortable did you find it?

Michelle: “I thought they fitted perfectly and they’re very supportive with a nice cushion in it. I noticed that it is quite a flat shoe which I quite like, so it was nice.”

Cheraag: “Definitely comfortable. I found I used to wear other brands beforehand but ASICS in general, Gel Resolution 8’s, Solution Speed’s all of them they’re very, very comfortable shoes. This 9th version was the same, definitely felt comfortable when I put them on for the first time.”

We asked Michelle, who is normally a UK 7, if she thought these were ‘true to size’?

“I think this is exactly a size 7. They fit me perfectly.”

When you first started moving in these Gel-Resolution 9’s for your warm up, how did the shoe perform?

Michelle: “It felt very natural, like it fitted around my foot immediately and it felt quite supportive, so I could move around very comfortably without being worried about my ankle or anything like that.

“I think these are a bit heavier than the Nike Vapors and they’re a bit more firm. I think the Nike’s are a bit softer, but I actually prefer the firmness because it makes me feel more comfortable running side to side you know.”

On the support and comfort these shoes offered when hitting groundstrokes?

Cheraag: “When you’re grinding away at the back these gave you a bit more durability. You felt like when you’re wearing these shoes you could go on and on and on. I definitely felt that for sure.”

Michelle: “It was good. I felt comfortable so the shoe felt really supportive and my ankle wasn’t moving around at all.”

The one-piece sole of the Gel-Resolution helps create a quality contact with the court to aid those players who want to slide. Did you experience this?

Michelle: “I wish I could [slide on hard courts]. I can’t but I would love to try!”

Cheraag: “Yes definitely. I felt that in general, with the rubber in these shoes, they are just a tiny bit more easier to slide which I like. They are a bit more squeaky as well. When you are trying to move especially into wide spaces these felt pretty stable and comfortable.”

ASICS Gel-Resolution 9 women'sHow about the stability and safety of these shoes when performing dynamic movements during a point?

Michelle: “I thought they were really good. I definitely would recommend them if you are someone that has a bit of a weak ankle, they will definitely support your feet very well.”

We asked Michelle if the new Flytefoam in her Gel-Resolution 9 shoe made a difference?

Michelle: “Yes. That was the first thing I noticed straight away. When I put them on they’re very cushioned and my foot felt very comfortable.”

The Gel-Resolution 9’s R.R.P. is £140/$150. We asked our players if they thought this was a fair price?

Cheraag: “They’re obviously cheaper than some other ASICS models like the Court FF, but price is very personal and depends on the type of player that you are and what you are looking for in a shoe.

“I think that £140 is a fair price considering ASICS do last very well. Even at a level where you are playing hours a day, they do last longer than other shoes that I have worn. So yes I still recommend them.”

“If you are playing at a club level you’re trying to get things that will last you a long time. If you’re looking for that durability from a shoe as a club player then these Gel-Resolution 9’s are the right choice”

Michelle: “Yes, I actually think that’s a pretty decent price. It’s a bit higher than what I am used to paying, but I think it’s worth it for the quality of the shoe.”

What’s our conclusion about the new ASICS Gel-Resolution 9?

ASICS haven’t drastically changed this model. They continue to provide great support and stability for a baseline player of all standards. Yes ASICS make lighter shoes than the Gel-Resolution but the relative difference in weight didn’t seem to effect our play testers with the benefits of the shoe’s stability really standing out.

The new foam cushioning seemed to make a difference with both testers feeling a high level of comfort even in this brand new shoe they’d never worn before.

Baseline grinders will migrate to this shoe as they play a style of tennis that requires a good connection with the surface to enable them to feel safe moving from side to side. The full length ‘one piece’ sole of the Gel-Resolution 9 certainly seems to assist in that aspect of movement.

ASICS Court FF3 tennis shoe review

The latest version of the ASICS Court FF launched in early 2023 after two years of development and close collaboration with Novak Djokovic, so the Tennishead players were full of anticipation as they headed to the courts for a day of testing.

Amongst shoe brands, ASICS have built a reputation that exudes the attention to detail you’d expect from any Japanese sports brand, but over time it’s their reliance on research to develop the technology in their tennis shoes that has resulted in their steady growth into the big leagues. Just take a look at the shoes the professionals are wearing and you’ll be surprised at how many ‘non-sponsored’ players choose to buy their own ASICS tennis shoes.

ASICS have achieved various ‘firsts’ within the tennis shoe field, most notably being the first (and still only) brand to create different models of tennis shoe to suit different styles of play and movement. For example, their Gel-Resolution range is specifically designed for your baseline grinder providing them with added support and grip as they patrol the back of the court.

The Court FF model features elements that will suit that ‘all-court’ player who needs support when moving from side to side but is equally comfortable moving around all areas of the tennis court as they take an aggressive position at the net. This dynamic movement has been characterised by Novak Djokovic who used his athleticisim to take the sport to a new level and hence why he decided to partner with ASICS so that they could design a shoe specifically for the way he moves on a tennis court.

What’s new in the Court FF3?

Tennishead readers can be sceptical when brands launch updated models, especailly in tennis rackets, with the notion that often it’s just been a ‘paint job’ and a chance to create some exposure on social media, but after talking with the head designer at ASICS and listening to him interview Novak for over an hour, its apparent that the developments in this third version of the Court FF are substantial and extremely well researched.

For the first time in a tennis shoe, the outsole is split into three separate parts which aims to create “a more supportive underfoot feel even in the most dynamic movements”. In other words, by allowing the sole of the shoe to flex and move it should create more grip and support no matter what movement you make. Tennis movement is unique because of it’s range of directions and constant twisting and turning which is why a three piece sole has been created.

The Court FF3 also features a redesigned ‘monosock’ which is an in-built sock that wraps around the foot and ankle. As you’ll see from the reaction of our testers, this element of the Court FF design is different from other shoes and certainly serves a purpose in terms of comfort and stability.

Watch as our experts try out the ASICS Court FF tennis shoes

The Court FF3 review

It’s crucial for our credibility that when we take a product out onto court we simply let the players try it out and then we simply publish what they report. It’s the only truly unbiased method of reviewing a product. This time we were joined by Michelle and Cheerag who are both professional tennis players plying their trade on the ITF circuits.

Michelle had never worn ASICS shoes before whilst Cheerag had recently moved to the ASICS Solution Speed model after years of wearing Nike Vapors, mainly because he had suffered recently with shin splints.

What shoe do you normally wear when playing a tournament?

Michelle: “I normally wear the Nike Vapors. They have always been comfy and I’ve never had an issue with them.”

Cheerag: “I wear the ASICS Solution Speed.”

ASICS Court FF3 men's

When you first took these Court FF’s out of the box what were your thoughts on the colour and the design?

Michelle: “I really liked it. I love white shoes but when there is a little bit of colour it adds a nice bit of pop, so I thought they were really pretty.”

Cheerag: “The styling I like quite a lot. The other ASICS I have worn have the tongue separate whereas this is all connected inwards and cushions the foot”

And then you tried them on. The Court FF has an in-built sock which often leads to players finding them snug when they first put them on. How did you find it when you first put them on?

Michelle: “Yeah I felt the same. When I was putting them on it was quite tight but when your foot was inside it felt like a cushion instead of just being very firm. I felt immediately very comfortable. They fitted around my foot perfectly.”

Cheerag: “Comfort wise it was significantly better than the majority of other shoes that I have worn and it is one of those shoes that you feel like you have worn them for a few weeks already because they are just a lot more comfortable and malleable. I feel like the cushioning of these is just a tiny bit more, which suits me because of all the injury problems I have had.”

In terms of sizing, you told us you are a 7. This pair you are trying today are also a 7. How did it feel? Do you think this is exactly true to size or do you think this is a bit smaller or bigger than you are used to?

Michelle: “For me, I think it was exactly a 7 so the size matching was spot on.”

Then you had a warm up in the shoes. You started moving around the court, not playing tennis, just running around. What was your first impression of the shoe?

Michelle: “I feel like when you always try out new shoes they’re going to be a little bit uncomfortable but this one picked up after five minutes of moving around and I thought my foot was not uncomfortable and already fitted. So it felt pretty good from the get-go.”

Cheerag: “I felt a difference. I just felt the Nike Vapors were quite flat and then when I changed to these ASICS they have a lot more give and they were a lot more springy especially from the start.”

In terms of the weight of the shoe, does it feel lighter or heavier than you are used to?

Michelle: “It feels a little heavier than my shoe, but I personally don’t mind it.”

Cheerag: “It’s heavier than my normal Solution Speed’s but I don’t think it had an impact, I definitely noticed it but no, I don’t think it had an impact. It is just something you get used to after a bit.”

Then you started hitting balls, kicking off with groundstrokes. In terms of your movement side-to-side, what was your feedback on the shoe?

Michelle: “I actually really liked it because it kept my foot in place. Sometimes with my shoes I wish I had tightened them extra firm so that my foot doesn’t move around because I have quite weak ankles. But this one felt very supported when I was moving side-to-side and changing direction.”

Cheerag: “I felt that it was easier to stay on my toes. One of the reasons I had shin splints is because the arch in my foot is a bit fallen and my foot is a bit flatter, so in these shoes in particular it is easier to stay on your toes”

So with the support from the monosock, what would you say? Was it around the front of the foot, the ankle or all across?

Michelle: “For me it was more in the ankle which felt very supported. I don’t know if that is because of the built-in sock.”

ASICS tennis shoes include FlyteFoam which is a foam developed by ASICS and placed in the soul of the shoe that makes them feel extra cushioned. How did you feel in terms of bounce and cushioning?

Michelle: “Really good. When I was running for the shots it felt very lightweight. I didn’t feel like my foot was getting a lot of impact, so it was really nice getting that support and it felt really gentle on my feet which is always a positive thing to have in a shoe.”

When you were trying the more dynamic movements such as going out wide and trying to push back, and then going backwards and forwards, how was the flexibility of the shoe when you were changing direction?

Michelle: “It was really good. My ankle was really supported and not moving at all so I really felt comfortable running side-to-side and changing direction.”

Cheerag: “I definitely felt that it was more stable especially when you are pushing off to come back to the middle. That is when I felt it the most.”

Novak Djokovic ASICS Court FF3

Djokovic worked very closely on these shoes. He tried out nine different prototypes and came to the conclusion that this model worked for him with the three-piece sole. When your foot is planted on the floor what sort of feeling did you get from the sole? Is it any different to what you have had before and did you notice the fact that it has got more flexibility around the sole?

Michelle: “Yes I think so. I think the Nike shoes are quite flat so I think that I am used to not a lot of support around there. So, this felt nice and I keep saying it, but I felt really supported and I don’t know if that is because of these or the in-built socks, it all comes together really well.”

Cheerag: “Obviously Novak knows what he is talking about, so it gives you a feeling that you are going to have a lot of stability in the shoe and you can trust it. That is the main thing. If you are a player that slides like Novak, which I also do a little bit, the shoe is a lot more stable and can take it.”

If you were an amateur player who changed shoes every six months to a year then is the price of £180/$190 fair for these shoes?

Michelle: “Yes, for sure. I would definitely be getting a pair of these because I feel like they would last you a long time and they would give you that support, so if I didn’t play at a pro level (and even at the pro level) I would really recommend these. I would buy these.”

Cheerag: “Yes, I definitely think it is worth it. I mean at the end of the day you are trying to get the best performance on the court, so 100% these shoes are worth the price.”

ASICS Court FF3 women's

What’s the conclusion about the new ASICS Court FF3

ASICS’s premium tennis shoe needed to perform in the eyes of our testers to match the price tag, and in our testing it seems to have done well.

The stability the shoe provides during the types of dynamic movement you’ll create on a tennis court certainly stood out to our testers. This helped both players to feel confident in their movement when wearing the shoe.

The immediate comfort when trying on this brand new shoe, that neither had even seen let alone worn before, was an impressive outcome from the review. For tennis players, finding a shoe that feels good when straight out of the box is an important element when choosing a new tennis shoe. (To be fair this is often the feedback when Tennishead players try any ASICS shoe fresh from the box)

The bounce and support of the foam in the shoe also came in for praise. For our two elite players they both felt that feeling ‘springy’ really helps their game and this shoe certainly delivered on that aspect.

Was price an issue? As professional players in the lower ranks of the game who are paying for their own equipment, the price tag may have seemed steep, however when putting themselves in the position of a club player who’s looking for a quality, durable shoe that will last them for 6 months or more then both players didn’t hesitate and agreed that the Court FF3 offered excellent value for such a high quality shoe.

ASICS Court FF3 Novak Djokovic

For two years Novak Djokovic has been secretly working with the design team from leading tennis footwear brand ASICS helping them create the latest version of their iconic tennis shoe, the ASICS Court FF3

In his own words it’s the level of dedication to his chosen sport that has played a huge part in making Novak Djokovic possibly the greatest tennis player of all time. That determination to succeed carries across literally every element of his life, so we shouldn’t be surprised when we hear about the level of analysis, research and detail that has gone into the design and manufacture of the ASICS Court FF3, the tennis shoe that Novak Djokovic will wear as he goes about his business of adding more Grand Slam singles titles to his current tally of 21.

ASICS Court FF3 Novak Djokovic

The Court FF3 is ASICS premium tennis shoe and is targeted at a tennis player wanting to both grind away at the baseline but also attack the net and cover all parts of the tennis court. The technology in the shoe starts its’ life in the ASICS Institute of Sports Science in Kobe, Japan, where over 100 sports scientists work on designing and creating technology to go into every ASICS shoe.

For the new Court FF3, those designers have been consulting closely with the Serbian star for over two years and at one point had 9 different prototypes of the shoe which Djokovic tested at various points of their production process to feedback the detail of where they had got it right or where they needed to make changes.

The Court FF3 includes an outsole that is split into 3 separate parts which was created to aid the sort of dynamic movement that players must make when they are trying to cover the whole court. This is different to other tennis shoes that normally have a one piece outsole or a split outsole.

ASICS Tennishead review Court FF3

This new outsole technology has given a 7% reduction in stress on the body according to test carried out at their research facility.

The Court FF shoe also features a unique monosock design that enables the foot to be held firmly in place thanks to an inbuilt sock construction thus adding stability as the player slides around the court.

ASICS also created the TwissTruss technology that is included in the Court FF shoe. “The science of TWISTRUSS technology provides improved bend and twist which minimizes power loss when the foot is bending and twisting. It resists torsion with rigid integrity and returns energy for faster side to side motion.”

Tennishead were one of the first to be able to test out the new ASICS Court FF3 shoe when we visited the official shoe launch in Marbella alongside Novak Djokovic himself. We’ll be publishing the results of that testing within our full review of the shoe very soon.

Novak Djokovic will have new shoes on his feet when he steps onto court at the Australian Open as he confirmed that he has no retirement plans whilst he can still compete at the very highest level

Novak Djokovic was in a relaxed mood as he sat on the stage at the ASICS Global Tennis Summit in his home town of Marbella to announce the launch of the new ASICS Court FF 3 shoe, after an exhaustive two year process that saw him work closely with the ASICS design team on what they are calling their ‘best tennis shoe ever’.

Novak Djokovic ASICS Court FF3

Tennishead were present at the event where we were one of the first to test the new shoes on court with the review to be published soon in our dedicated ‘Tennishead Shoe‘ category.

Djokovic spoke honestly about his plans to continue playing so long as he was right at the top of the game and in with a chance of adding to his tally of 21 Grand slam singles titles.

“I really don’t at the moment see myself playing professional tennis and not being one of the candidates or favorites to win a Grand Slam or one of the top spots in the world.

“I don’t see myself being 25 and playing at a medium-high level. I just want to play always at the highest level, that’s something I demand from myself and my team demand from me.

“I’m proud to share my journey with ASICS for the launch of their new collection, especially the new COURT FF™ 3 tennis shoe. I’ve worked in very close collaboration with the team in Europe and Japan to improve the previous version, which were already great shoes. At this point in my career, it’s essential that the shoes I choose to wear give me confidence on court and suit my playing style. And that’s exactly what I get from ASICS. They understand me and are committed to improving even the smallest detail, which I value and respect. Nothing feels better than playing in ASICS.”

ASICS have revealed that the new Court FF 3 “boasts an industry-first three-piece outsole to provide more flexibility and comfort than ever before. Results of biomechanical testing at the ASICS Institute of Sport Science resulted in a 7% lower impact on the body at the point of ground contact, compared to the previous model, ultimately reducing stress on the body and enabling a quicker recovery.”

Tennishead and ASICS have a long standing collaboration as part of the Tennishead CLUB, the world’s only virtual tennis club with all members receiving a head-to-toe ASICS tennis outfit as one of the main membership benefits. ASICS tennis shoe comparison

Leading tennis footwear brand ASICS offer a wide variety in their tennis shoe range so we wanted to find out what the differences were between each shoe and how they performed when rigorously tested on court.

Background

Founded on the principles of ‘Kaizen’, ASICS are a global leader in tennis footwear with a reliance on research and technology to guide their products. ‘Kaizen’ literally means ‘continuos improvement’ hence why the brand will often update existing shoes to try and squeeze out the small improvements that can make the difference between winning and losing in professional & amateur tennis. We have always admired the fact that the shoe’s you see Novak Djokovic wearing to win Grand Slams are exactly the same as the shoe you can buy online or in store.

The ASICS tennis range

We’ve taken the three most popular styles from the ASICS tennis shoe range to test, which are:

ASICS Solution Speed FF2: The lightest shoe in the ASICS range is worn by David Goffin and Alex de Minaur and is designed for a player that likes to attack the net and needs a shoe to help them move fast and make dynamic movements all over the court.

ASICS Gel-Resolution 8: The sturdiest shoe in the range is built for baseliners who want stability and durability as they pound the back of the court, such as Matteo Berrettini.

ASICS Court FF2: Their highest priced tennis shoe was developed in partnership with Novak Djokovic and combines technology taken from the Gel-Resolution and Solution Speed to offer a ‘best of both’ shoe that should suit an all court player.

Watch as our testers take all three shoes onto court and give their feedback:

The play test

Testing shoes straight out of the box is a very personal experience which is why we use multiple players for the same test so that we gather a variety of feedback based on different opinions and personal experiences. We make sure to test the shoe in the same situations you would face during a match or practise session so that the feedback is as credible and relevant as possible.

Our Tennishead play testers for this review of the ASICS range were:

Will: Sees himself as a ‘counter punching’ style of play and has been into tennis for 16 years.

George: An energetic baseliner who plays high level competitions on a weekly basis.

Mollie: A club player who hasn’t worn ASICS before.

Hayden: A young tournament player who plays an aggressive game and really likes to get to the net.

Gel-Resolution 8

ASICS Gel-Resolution 8

The Gel Resolution 8 is ASICS heaviest tennis shoe designed for baseliners who need stability and durability. How did this shoe feel when you first tried it on?

George: “It’s a super comfy shoe which initially was a little tricky to put on but fitted like a glove once my foot was in the shoe.”

Kenzo: “I could instantly feel the extra weight compared to other ASICS shoes but with that came a sturdy feeling shoe that offered more support and helped me feel safe when going wide and sliding.”

Hayden: “I could feel that they are a heavier shoe but are really comfortable to play in which gave me a lot more support. I could rely on this shoe more.”

Mollie: “My first impression was that I didn’t find them as comfortable or cushioned as the ASICS Solution Speed. They have a much firmer feel so I’m guessing that if you spend more hours on court these will be more durable than other tennis shoes.?

The Gel Resolution 8 features a one piece sole. How did this translate into grip on the court?

George: “When moving side to side and forwards and backwards I felt there was no danger of slipping. Personally I don’t slide when playing tennis but at no point in this shoe did I feel like I was going to slip over and I felt in control of my movement at all times.”

The Gel Resolution features ‘Dynawrap’ technology around the front of the foot which helps to keep your foot in place. How did this make the shoe feel?

George: “I think this may be the reason I personally found the shoe tricky to put on at first but once my foot was in the shoe it felt really padded and enclosed in.”

Solution Speed FF2

ASICS Solution Speed FF2

The Solution Speed FF2 is ASICS lightest tennis shoe designed for all court players who like to attack the net. How did this feel when you first put it on?

George: “It fits really true to size for my feet and is super comfy.”

Kenzo: “This shoe was the best fit for my foot and the most true to size of all three ASICS shoes we’ve tried. It felt like a glove when wearing it as it’s so lightweight and snug.”

Hayden: “As soon as I put these on I could tell how lightweight and comfortable they were, which is a feature across all ASICS shoes, but these did feel really light”

Mollie: “When I first tried these on they felt really comfortable, lightweight and cushioned. I use to wear Yonex shoes and compared to those the grip from the ASICS Solution Speed is really nice.”

When you were moved around the court especially out wide how did this shoe perform?

George: “This shoe in particular is very lightweight so it’s easy to push back after you’ve hit a shot as there is less weight holding you down.”

Kenzo: “It was easy to change direction in these shoes and the lightness allowed me to move quicker, but I still felt supported around my ankles when wearing these.”

The Solution Speed FF2 features a split sole which is designed to help with dynamic movements in all directions. How did this shoe perform for you when changing direction?

George: “This shoe is super grippy when changing direction and so I felt nimble on my feet and the shoe supported my dynamic movements well. It felt easy to change direction”

The Solution Speed features ASICS ‘Flytefoam’ technology which is also used in all ASICS running shoes. It’s lightweight but cushioned foam that appears throughout this shoe. Did that technology seem apparent when wearing this shoe?

George: “Most definitely. I think it contributes to the lightness of this shoe meaning its easy to changed direction and has a padded feel. I definitely don’t feel any shockwaves coming up through my knees which must be down to this technology.”

Court FF

ASICS Court FF2

The ASICS Court FF is their premium shoe from the tennis range and aims to offer an option for both attacking players and baseliners by combining the best of the technology from the Gel Resolution and Solution Speed into one shoe, but it does come with a premium price. How did this shoe feel the first time you tried it on?

George: “Super easy to put on and super comfy because it’s very padded all the way through”

Kenzo: “I like these shoes however for my foot they didn’t seem to fit true to size with a little gap at my toes so I would need to take a whole or half size smaller in these Court FF’s. However I could definitely feel the quality difference between these Court FF’s and the other 2 ASICS tennis shoes we’ve tried. These offered the best mix of the lightness of the Solution Speed but the durability of the Gel-Resolution. So for me the price matches the quality.”

Hayden: “I thought this was really comfortable and from the moment I tried it on I felt at home wearing this shoe”

The Court FF features a ‘monosock’ which is a built in sock that aims to aid stability by keeping your foot in place as you move around. Did you feel the benefits of this technology?

George: “It was a little strange when I first put it on as it felt like I was putting on an extra sock but once my foot was in the shoe it did feel nicely stable and enclosed.”

You will have seen that Novak Djokovic wears the Court FF and he was actually involved in the design of the shoe. In his mind was to create a light shoe which offered the stability that a player like him needs when moving round the court. How did they feel to you when moving around the tennis court?

George: “I found them really stable when I was in the corners of the court, I could easily change direction without being weighed down so they offered a great balance between being lightweight and providing stability.”

Comparing all three shoes

The Solution Speed FFT and the Gel-Resolution 8 shoes have an R.R.P of £135 whereas the Court FF has an R.R.P of £170. Is the extra price of the Court FF justified by it’s performance in your opinion?

George: “For me I would be happy with the Gel Resolution of the Solution Speed as they are such high quality shoes I don’t think you need to pay the £40 extra for the Court FF.”

“I did find that all 3 ASICS shoes felt slightly different in terms of the sizing with the Solution Speed for my foot being perfectly true to size whereas for me the Court FF and the Gel-Resolution came out larger on my foot so I would either where 2 pairs of socks or I would buy a half size smaller in those two shoes.”

Kenzo: “I would say it is worth spending the extra money for the Court FF because it offered extra quality and stability.”

Hayden: “The Court FF was my favourite shoe because it had the stability and durability of the Gel-Resolution combined with the lightness of the Solution Speed”

Mollie (who only tried the Solution Speed and Gel-Resolution but not the Court FF): “I would choose the Solution Speed. They are the most comfortable with the best cushioning”

In conclusion then..

The technical and production differences between the three ASICS shoes was very apparent to our testers especailly the difference in weight between the Solution Speed and the other two styles. In fact the Solution Speed is around 40 grams lighter than the Gel-Resolution and Court FF which is quite a lot for a tennis shoe.

The play test feedback did highlight the need to pick a shoe that suits your style of play as the shoes have qualities that will suit specific types of tennis player.

However it’s also apparent that sizing is important and isn’t necessarily exactly the same across all three of these ASICS shoes, so if you can try before you buy that is our recommendation. It seems that the Solution Speed FF2 fits a little more snug than the Gel-Resolution 9 and Court FF 2 in these versions.
