These stylish Stick It Wear?! tennis t-shirts were born from a love of the ‘momentary celebration’ that the designer experienced when growing up in sports-mad Chicago.

 

Long gone are the times when tennis t-shirts were just for the courts and now when you look at a busy tennis club mix-in you’ll see all manor of brands and styles on show. Tennis players want to look good on court and off it and sports clothing can be seen as much in restaurants & bars as on the sporting stage.

The founder of Stick It Wear?!, Joe Durica, grew up in Chicago during the 1970’s & 80’s when the city entered a creative boon thanks to the advent of House music. Then came those long hot summers with Michael Jordan bringing home 6 NBA basketball titles for his famous Chicago Bulls team.

Joe noticed that procedural victories had lasting effects of enhancing the esteem of the city and its fans. That is where he understood the influence of sports. The brand’s bread-and-butter shirts are adorned with stick characters or ‘smart figures’ that are directly inspired from the refined Olympic pictograms of the 70’s and 80’s.

Tennishead stumbled across his website that sells a range of tennis T-Shirts and tops linked to all the major USA sports but with a very decent range of tennis focussed styles. We contacted Joe who kindly sent us some samples to try out.

The ‘vintage tourney’ t-shirts focus on bringing the past back to life. For example, the Dallas Masters shirts is a ‘faux tournament’ recreation of a popular shirt they may have missed in by gone days. A shirt featuring the wood, the guts and the hair of their favorite free flowing players. This Stick It Wear?! t-shirt takes inspiration from the immediately recognisable faces of those two iconic players combined with a funky ‘disco’ font.

The quality of shirt is great and could easily be worn as a casual top with jeans or for a friendly match at your local club.

Joe also produces t-shirts using a more ‘performance’ focussed fabric and these shirts feature the stick features more artistic interpretations of popular player movements that you will instantly recognise. Although the characters are never revealed in this fun game of ‘guess who?’, we love his depiction of Federer playing a backhand, Kyrgios showing off his tweener and Nadal pounding a forehand with that unmistakable follow through round his head. These performance shirts are made from 100% polyester which deals well with sweat.

Patrick Mouratoglou was delighted to announce an exciting new partnership between his Nice based tennis training academy and Japanese tennis clothing & shoe brand ASICS

 

When Patrick Mouratgolou speaks many listen and often act on his words. It’s why he’s been so succesful in helping produce some of the world’s best tennis players including Stefanos Tsitsipas, Serena Williams and lately Coco Gauff. tennishead has had a long relationship with Patrick through his revealing and exclusive columns written for tennishead magazine, so we were delighted to be in attendance at a sun drenched Mouratoglou Academy for the official unveiling of the partnership with ASICS.

Mouratoglou has often courted controversy with his outspoken views on the need to ramp up the excitement on the professional tennis court specifically in the area of on court coaching, which he feels would enable the sport to grow by increasing the excitement and improving the experience for the general tennis fans.

It’s this level of insight that is one reason ASICS were attracted to the coach and his academy as was confirmed by ASICS Product Director Gary Raucher when we interviewed him:

“It was a partnership that just naturally occurred over time. ASICS really wants to show our commitment to tennis and Patrick has growth ambitions – together we are complimentary – we want the insight from players and coaches – we focus on brand preference more than awareness so this partnership isn’t just about people seeing the logo it really is about being able to get that feedback which will help us develop the best possible products going forward. We are strong in other parts of the world but Patrick has a great reach in France”

tennishead then asked Gary why ASICS is focussing on tennis:

“For us there is a really strong brand fit. A lot of other brands just focus on the physical activity itself whereas for us its about the mental benefits of that sport. Tennis is such a mental game in both directions. You need to be mentally fit to play tennis but by playing you become more mentally fit. Compare this to a sport like golf which doesn’t necessarily help your mental wellbeing because while you are walking around you are still thinking other other things. In tennis you are only focusing on that shot or point which creates mental relaxation and for ASICS that was important.”

We questioned Gary as to whether he thought the tennis market could grow in terms of participation from it’s current base:

“Yes we do see growth. It comes in waves. Patrick’s theory is that we need more characters in tennis and the rules have become so stringent with players being fined a lot it has taken some of the personality out of the game. We believe that as new individuals emerge and they can show their personality you will start to see the sport grow. The great thing about tennis is that its very accessible, its very easy to play unlike, football where you need to arrange 22 people to play, in tennis all you need is a partner – you can play it your entire life – it’s a great family sport – so there are so many things going for tennis that will allow it to grow so if we can get more excitement into tennis it will enable it to grow even faster”

Speaking about the partnership, Mouratoglou said: “I’m thrilled to partner with ASICS. They are not only a brand with a strong reputation of having the most technologically advanced tennis shoes on the market, but they also believe just as strongly as I do in the importance of the mental aspect of tennis. I’m looking forward to working closely with ASICS on the research and development side of the game as well, with their Institute of Sport Science in Kobe, Japan.”

Andy Murray has already started planning for life after tennis and it’s apparent that being involved in the business side of the sport is one way he will keep himself busy. We spoke to the founder of the premium British sportswear brand that now counts Murray as a shareholder and advisor

 

Since that emotional day in Australia back in January this year when he prematurely announced his possible retirement from the sport, Andy Murray has been focussing on repairing his hip so that he can extend his playing career with a key objective of enabling his children to watch him do what he does best. But behind the scenes Murray has also been busy securing his future beyond the playing courts where he’s spent most of his childhood and adult life.

Earlier this year Andy Murray was officially announced as the new Board Advisor and shareholder of up and coming tennis clothing brand Castore. Alongside the launch of their debut tennis clothing collection, we spoke exclusively to Tom Beahon, one of the two Liverpudlian brothers that founded Castore back in 2015.

Tennishead (TH): Who initiated the partnership between Andy Murray and Castore and why?

Tom Beahon (TB): The partnership came about very organically – Castore was growing extremely rapidly and we were starting to look for our first major athlete partnership. We had an existing relationship with somebody who was on Andy’s coaching team so he was aware of the brand; when we were introduced there was an immediate connection and shared mindset about the desire to build a long term partnership that was different to the traditional athlete – brand partnerships.

TH: What will Andy be doing for Castore during his playing career and after he retires?

TB: Andy will wear Castore for all of his on court and off court activities. He has become a shareholder in Castore as part of this partnership and following his retirement will play a prominent role in the business across product design, testing and marketing strategies including athlete partnerships.

TH: What makes Castore tennis clothing different for a club tennis player?

TB: All Castore garments are created with the single intention of helping enhance performance. All Castore tennis garments are made using specialist performance fabrics sourced directly from family owned mills in Italy and designed to pull sweat away from the body more rapidly and remain light and comfortable no matter how intense a training session or match becomes.

TH: Will you be moving into tennis shoes and/or tennis equipment at some pint or just sticking with clothing?

TB: Castore is launching its inaugural footwear collection later in 2019 but this will focus on training and lifestyle products rather than being tennis specific.

TH: Are you going to sponsor any other tennis players in the future?

Rafael Nadal was unveiled as the new face (and body) of Tommy Hilfiger at a pop-up tennis event in New York ahead of next weekŠ—Ès US Open

The 14-time Grand Slam champion took on some of the Big Apple’s best dressed in Bryant Park in central Manhattan on Tuesday.

Dressed in a Tommy Hilfiger suit, Nadal played against a series of Tommy Hilfiger models, and each time Nadal scored a point his opponents removed an item of clothing, eventually unveiling the new Tommy Hilfiger men’s and women’s underwear designs.

“Rafael has been a personal friend and supporter of our brand for nearly 10 years. We are excited about this exclusive partnership, which brings one of the greatest athletes of this generation into our Tommy family,” said Tommy Hilfiger.

“Working with Tommy is a fantastic experience – he’s always got a smile on his face and a positive attitude,” said Nadal. “He’s a very special person with great taste and an eye for design. He always knows what looks best and is good at giving style advice.”
