Alexander Zverev is aiming for the ‘best season of his career’ in 2022
Alexander Zverev hopes that he can build upon his successful 2021 season and use the momentum he gained to enjoy the best season of his career in 2022.
In 2021, Zverev won Olympic gold for Germany at the rescheduled 2020 Tokyo Olympics and was the only player on the tour to win two ATP Masters 1000 events. The German now hopes to consolidate this impressive year and go on to have a career-best season.
Zverev has previously outlined his ambitious goals for the near future as he hopes to start winning Grand Slam titles and in turn take the World number one position from 20-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
Six-time Slam ace Boris Becker supports these lofty goals and hopes that Zverev will surpass him as Germany’s greatest male player ever.
Zverev told reporters that “I won the [ATP] finals in 2018 and had a really bad 2019. I hope I can change that. I hope I can do it differently. I was a lot younger back then. I didn’t know how to handle big titles maybe as well.
“I was 21 years old going into the 2019 season. I do feel I’m a little bit of a different player but also I’m a different person, I think. I’ve had a lot more experience on the court, I had a lot more experience outside the court.
“I know how to handle maybe the media a little bit better. I know how to handle pressure maybe a tiny bit better, as well.
“After the Olympics I continued to play great tennis. I hope I can still use that momentum going into 2022, and hopefully have the best season of my career so far.”
“The first six months of this season, Novak [Djokovic] has dominated tennis. In the last six months of the season, I think the titles were a bit more split. They were split between Novak, Daniil [Medvedev], and myself,” Zverev claimed.
“I’m looking forward to the beginning of the season, looking forward to the season in general.”
To start his 2022 season, Zverev will represent Germany at the upcoming ATP Cup before then competing in the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open.
