John Isner ‘really proud’ to be one Wimbledon match from ‘all-time’ ATP record

John Isner is just a handful of big serves in the Wimbledon third round away from becoming the man with the most aces in ATP tour history. 

The 37-year-old American already has 90 aces at The Championships from two matches this year, leading second-placed Nick Kyrgios by 36. 

Not only that, but Isner entered SW19 with 13,634 career aces on the ATP tour, in second place all-time by just 94. 

That means that should he hit just five aces in his third round match with Italian youngster Jannik Sinner, he will break the record.

He said after defeating Andy Murray in the Wimbledon second round: “I’ll get it in my next match over the course of five sets. 

“I should be able to get six (five) aces. 

“Yeah, it’s actually pretty cool. 

“It’s not going to put me in the Hall of Fame or anything like that, because that’s not me. 

“But I will be the all-time leader.”

At 37, Isner could yet play for a few more years.

In fact, the man who leads him in the ace tally, Ivo Karlovic, is 43 and not technically retired yet, though his ranking is now at a lowly 428th in the world.

Isner added: “I’ll keep playing, keep adding to my total.

“I don’t know if it [is a record that] will get broken.

“I could be up there for a long time.

“It’s actually really cool, something I’m really proud of. 

“[Karlovic], I don’t know if he’s retired or what, but he hasn’t played in a long time. 

“I knew I would kind of eventually track him down. 

“I hope I didn’t totally jinx myself, right? 

“But I think I should be able to get six or seven aces in my next match. 

“We’ll see.”
