‘Not an excuse’ – US Open hopeful opens up on ’emotional’ injury after exit
Amanda Anisimova has had terrible luck since Wimbledon, revealing that she broke her toe ahead of playing her first round US Open match.
The world number 24 lost in the first round to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-3, before leaving the court in tears.
After losing in the second round of the Canadian Open, Anisimova had to withdraw from the second round of the Cincinnati Open ahead of competition in New York.
“Damn the last couple of weeks have been tough,” she began on social media. “I broke my toe in Cincinnati last week, and I’ve done everything I could to get ready for the Open.
“I’m proud of myself for giving myself a chance and playing the whole match. Even with getting injections in my foot that hurt more than the actual injury that I’m still recovering from.
“But I did all of this because I love this sport so much, even though it brings a lot of pain and disappointment. I hope I’ll be back stronger next year, and thank you to the crowd that is always the best here in New York. I love playing here.”
In a later tweet, Anisimova noted that Yulia Putintseva was the better player and was not using her injury as an excuse.
“I just wanted to share what’s been going on, because it’s been an emotional couple of weeks.”
Also this post is not an excuse and has nothing to do with my loss. My opponent played great and she deserved the win! I just wanted to share what’s been going on, because it’s been an emotional couple of weeks ? https://t.co/n9ELDpK9bo
