Bianca Andreescu recalls the ‘worst pain’ that she has ever felt

Bianca Andreescu has spoken publicly for the first time since being taken off the court in a wheelchair at the Miami Open, with the 2019 US Open champion detailing the extent of her injury.

Andreescu was playing in the fourth round of the Floridian WTA 1000 event against Ekaterina Alexandrova, and had lost a first set tie-break before going up an early break in the second set.

Ahead 2-0 in the second set, Andreescu appeared to go over on her ankle before screaming in pain and having to retire from the match.

The 22-year-old left the court in tears, leaving her fans worried due to a series of previous injuries that have kept the Canadian away from the sport.

Andreescu has since provided an update on social media, “Woke up with a brace on my foot… anyone know what happened?

She continued, “On a serious note, though… that was the worst pain I’ve ever felt… praying for nothing serious. Still waiting on official results. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and kind words, doesn’t go unnoticed.”

Before picking up the suspected ankle injury, Andreescu had been having a promising week having picked up a victory over No.10 Maria Sakkari, as well as fellow major champions Emma Raducanu and Sofia Kenin.

Andreescu’s fourth round opponent offered her sympathy both on and off the court.

“I’m just really sorry that it happened to [Andreescu],” said Alexandrova. “Seeing her on the court in so much pain, it’s just painful to watch. You cannot help, you can do nothing, which is terrible.”

The Russian added, “I think she’s going to be fine soon, and I’m wishing for her speedy recovery. The first set was super tough and great, and it probably could be a pretty good match for both of us, but unfortunately [Andreescu’s injury] happened.”

With the retirement Alexandrova moves onto her first Miami Open quarter-final, where she will take on Petra Kvitova later today.
