Carlos Alcaraz reveals he ‘wants to be like the big three’


Carlos Alcaraz has spoken about the ‘goals’ that he has achieved, as well as his desire to replicate the feats of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Alcaraz has had a meteoric rise to become the youngest ever No.1 over the past year, including winning the US Open and three Masters 1000 titles.

The Spaniard is currently bidding to retain his Miami Open crown, to become the eighth man to complete the sunshine double, and has been speaking about his achievements and hopes for the future.

“At the US Open I fulfilled my dream of being a Grand Slam winner and No.1, but I am a very ambitious boy who constantly sets goals,” said Alcaraz.

He continued, “Right now, my big challenge is to be one of the best in history. It may sound crazy, but I want to be like the big three and that is what motivates me to give the best of myself.”

Alcaraz never got the opportunity to play against his now retired ‘idol’, Federer, but has played against and beaten both Djokovic and Nadal.

The 19-year-old has only played against Djokovic once before, and has spoken about his wish to play the Serb again, “I have played against Novak when he was at 100%. I would say in Madrid [last year] he played really, really well. So it was close.”

“I agree with him [on recent comments Djokovic made about being the best]. When he’s 100%, probably he’s one of, or the best player in the world. What Novak has achieved, the level of Novak, for example, in Australia was unbelievable and really high.”

Alcaraz added, “As I said before, I really want to play against Novak when he’s 100% and I’m sure I’m going to enjoy it. That’s all I can say right now.”

Djokovic could officially become No.1 again if Alcaraz does not retain his Miami Open title this week, with the Spaniard set to take on Taylor Fritz in the quarter-final later today.
